As a young adult, the dominant message was “porn is bad.”
Depending upon the context of the conversation or situation, sex in general was bad. And, the concept of sexuality, sexual expression, gender expression, and/or gender variance was just plain old non-existent.
In fact, growing up Pentecostal, pretty much everything enjoyable in the free world was “of the flesh,” and could lead to “demon possession.” This, of course, was undesirable, and the prevailing impression us children often walked away from Sunday school with, was that constant prayer and avoiding most everything fun was the one fail-safe way to avoid demons, the Devil, and eternal damnation. For the newer reader, I’ve been deployed for the last 11 months, and prior to that, I was in training for four months. By the time this is all said and done, I would have had about 16 months of long-distance lovin’ for my home town of Chicago under my belt.
To say that I am homesick is a bit of an understatement.
